Playbill: Reeve Carney Is Broadway's Spiderman/Peter Parker | News

Producers of the new Broadway-bound Spider-Man, Turn Off the Dark gave a progress report about the developing show on Nov. 5. New producing partners are on board and Reeve Carney has been announced to play the title role.

No opening date was announced beyond "2010." The previous first preview date was announced to be Feb. 25, 2010, at the Hilton.

"Key creatives" met Nov. 5 and confirmed the following:

Michael Cohl has joined the production as lead producer on the show. Jeremiah J. Harris is now second producer on the show. The full producing team for the project is Michael Cohl, Jeremiah J. Harris, Hello Entertainment/David Garfinkle, Marvel Entertainment/David Maisel, and Sony Pictures Entertainment.

Full financing for Spider-Man is expected to be in place shortly. Once this happens the show will resume full production.

The show will open in 2010 at the Hilton Theatre in New York. No date was given.

Michael Cohl stated, "Having started early on with Spider-Man and now taking on the lead producing role is extremely exciting and a welcome challenge. Knowing the details and intricacies of this wildly ambitious project, I want to 'turn off the dark' on all the wild speculation about the show — it's moving forward!"

Spider-Man director Julie Taymor stated, "With a team that includes Bono, Edge and Glen Berger, there was never a question in my mind that Spider-Man would happen — it was just a matter of when. I am delighted that Michael Cohl is making this a reality."

After "an exhaustive search that included a casting call tour spanning six cities and thousands of candidates," the producers and creative team chose Reeve Carney to play the role of Peter Parker, The Amazing Spider-Man. Carney joins previously announced cast members Evan Rachel Wood as Mary Jane Watson, Peter Parker’s girlfriend and Alan Cumming as Norman Osborn (aka Green Goblin).

Reeve is the lead singer of Carney, the "hot up and coming rock band" whose newest single "Love Me Chase Me" was just released. The band's first full length album, entitled "Mr. Green," will be released in early 2010 on Interscope Records. Reeve's acting credits include Julie Taymor's upcoming film version of "The Tempest" and the film version of the acclaimed novel "Snow Falling on Cedars."

Julie Taymor continued, "Having recently finished shooting 'The Tempest' with Reeve as the young prince, I am thrilled to cast him in an entirely different role as Peter Parker in Spider-Man. When I first saw Reeve, he was performing with his terrific band Carney. The music of Bono and Edge requires an extraordinary talent — not only is Reeve a great rock and roll singer but his acting is equally fresh and authentic."

Bono and The Edge, who have written the music and lyrics for the production stated, "Our ambition was to find a Peter Parker who could really act and sing, but who still brings a kind of performance that could be new to Broadway audiences. We wanted something a little more authentically rock and roll. Reeve is everything we could have hoped for: an amazing voice and a truly charismatic presence."

So, Carney is moving to New York at the end of this year and won't be moving back to or playing a show in LA until 2011 :-(

But, before we leave we're playing one last show at the biggest venue we've ever headlined - The El Rey! This place is huge and we can not wait to fill it up with music for you! You might be wondering why we're moving to NYC, but before I get to that I wanta recap our summer for you!

We opened up for Shooter Jennings, The Veronicas, Michael Frante and Spearhead, Jackie Greene, and Gov't Mule and each band was so fun to work with! Our touring also took us to some really sweet festivals including Byron Bay in Australia, 10,000 Lakes in Michigan, and Lolla-freakin'-palooza in Chicago which, yes, was insane :-) Basically, we got to make lots of mistakes in front of other audiences so we don't make any mistakes in front of our home crowd! Oh wait, we're actually probably gonna make some mistakes in front of you too….son of a! Well, we'll try our hardest not to…maybe…

Anywho, we also found time to shoot our first music video for a song called "Love Me Chase Me" and I'm trying to figure out how to express my excitement about this little production :-) As a former AP Calculus BC student I did some rough math and it turns out that if you calculate with polar coordinates this video makes us look 237% cooler than we actually are - that's some serious geometric growth people, and it's all thanks to our lovely and talented director Timothy Garrett!

Getting back to that whole CARNEY-is-moving-to-NYC thing, I unfortunately have been told to keep my lips sealed by our label, management, and booking agent :-( All I can tell you is that as a band we are REALLY excited for what the next year is going to bring and we'll be making LOTS of music together - like 8 days a week ;-)

But, make no mistake, we are going to miss playing in LA more than anything because you guys have supported us since day one, and we definitely owe you more than 1 show per year. But, we're so excited that January is creeping around the corner seeing as how that's when Interscope will be releasing our debut album, "Mr. Green." So, while we may be gone for all of 2010, we FINALLY have some recordings that we can leave with you all while we're away :-)

Which actually brings me to another exciting update ;-) That music video I was talking about is coming out soon...

CARNEY Returns to L.A. 8/20 at The Roxy! | News

Goodness Gracious, what a couple of months it's been :-)

We've gone from opening for the Veronicas, to playing at 10,000 Lakes/DFest, to headlining our own little club tour, to joining a production of Grease in Jamaica, to driving towards Chicago so we can finish things off at Lollapalooza - and all in a matter of about 3 months! OK kids, which one of these is different than the other...hint, it involves the Caribbean...hint, it is the whole Jamaica bit...this is why I'm not a magician anymore...

It's been quite the summer and in some ways it's just getting started which is why I'm writing this little ditty ;-)

It is my honor to officially announce that our next LA show will be held at The Roxy on August, 20th and is going to be sponsored by KROQ Locals Only! We're really excited about getting to play in Los Angeles after so many months on the road and we can't wait to see you all there!

Hey all!

Our tour with the Veronicas is coming to an end today in Philly and we've had such an amazing time with them :-) Lots of great stories and performances to remember and a whole new grip of fans who are super-duper freakin' passionate!

Being on tour has definitely rejuvenated us and thankfully we've got even more of it coming up :-) This time though we're HEADLINING! Which means if you live in one of these cities or have friends and family there we'd LOVE to see you at one of these shows! All the people we can get out will help us more than you know, and because we're headlining it'll be just like what we do in LA @ The Troubadour, only in a different city! OK, definitely have some really exciting news for you guys :-)))))

We're finally releasing our first single! It's called "Love Me Chase Me" and it's gonna be on iTunes this Tuesday, June 16th!

Tell all of your friends to tell their friends so they can tell their friends dentists - everyone knows that the labels have finally figured out that dentist marketing is the only way to sell albums post-Napster...they just keep talking to you and you can't respond cause you got that dang water shooter in your mouth...you know what I mean...

Anywho, there are 2 things we're asking of all of you CARNEY people if you feel so inclined:

1) Buy the single "Love Me Chase Me" on iTunes and enjoy it! The second part of that sentence is actually the most important. - we really can't wait for you to hear this stuff :-)

Dang, It's been quite a while since I've sent one of these Carney updates hasn't it! Well, lots has happened since that last one - we're actually the number one selling artist in the Republic of Georgia!!!

OK, technically that's not true but also technically my car gets 48MPG and we all know that's not POSSIBLE!

Anywho, since our last show at The Troubadour we've gotten lots of juicy/exciting opportunites and I think it's time a buckle down and share them with you! One of them involves a penguin and a 9-iron, and the other one involves some ice cube but except this time we're gonna use a pitching wedge...please someone write us back with what movie this is from...

First off, while it is in it's budding stages we have finally started the OFFICIAL CARNEY STREET TEAM! Things are gonna ramp up over the next 6 months or so but you best get in on the ground floor or else you're gonna have to bust some MI Ethan Hunt elevator rope climbing stuff and we all know how much arm strength that takes - it's just too much, like for real. The Street Team has lots of info/answers/awesome things so sign up on all of these puppies!

First off, if you haven't checked our myspace or FB fan page you might not know this but we are freakin' on tour with The Veronicas! It's been really fun so far - in fact, at the first show we signed about 150 cell phones, stickers, posters, etc. for lots and lots of teenagers/youngin's. They're so dang passionate! We were like first of 7 and they still seemed star-struck - really excited to be getting such an awesome response and I can't help but think how funny it is that we're playing in front of 14-20 year olds in June and July and then baby boomers in September when we open for Government Mule. Oh yea, by the way, we're opening for Government Mule in September.

The tour dates are on our myspace and please tell your friends if we're coming to their city!

Here's a twiiiist! We're releasing our FIRST single "Love Me Chase Me" on June 16th! It's gonna be packaged with "Mr. Green" and we're gonna sell it as a 7inch vinyl that gives you a free mp3 download for each track - collector's item, analog music, however you want to think of it, I think you preeetty much are supposed to buy it. The artwork was done by an amazingly talented friend of ours in Tim Garrett and he really turned it into a piece of art. We're so excited because this is the first time we're gonna be able to share tracks from our new album!!! It's been a long time comin' and we can't wait for you guys to hear what we've been a brewin' :-)

Also, and I know a lot of you already know this, we're playing Lolla- freakin-palooza this year! Just thought I'd throw that in there for good measure ;-)

Hello hello!

As you probably already know CARNEY is playing tomorrow night (Saturday, April 25th) at The Troubadour and we'd love to see you there! We have Haim and Canon on the bill with us and we're fresh off a trip to Australia so it should be a really fun night!

Some of you had written me about how the link for presale tickets on the Troubadour's website wasn't working and you were concerned that it had already sold out. First off, that link is just being janky cause there are still tickets available, but also I wanted to let you know that we always set aside a certain amount of walk-up tickets for just that purpose, so don't hesitate to walk on up and see us play!

Just do your best to get there before 9p.m. and you should be good ;-) Who knows, there might even be tickets available at 10 - I never really know how this all works cause we're usually getting ready for the show at that time, getting our hair pouffy, ya know normal band stuff...

Oh! and good news on a totally different note - we're playing Lollapalooza this year!

CARNEY @ Troubadour April 25th! | News

So, we just got back from Australia and as you can see by the postage throughout this e-mail we totally flew first class...actually, that's definitely not true. I'm pretty sure I'm still sore/achy because of them dang high altitudes and crampedness (is that a word?...)

The 13 hour flight each way aside, we had a wonderful time playing for the beautiful people of Australia :-) Thankfully they welcomed us like their own and it looks like we'll be heading back there before we know it. For those of you that didn't even know we just spent the last couple weeks down under, here is what went down:

We were asked to play at one of the biggest festivals in the country - The Byron Bay Blues Festival! By our third performance we had about 4,000-5,000 people in the crowd and they were singing along on Testify - it was nuts! Lots of really nice press came out, our label started getting really excited about releasing our debut in OZ, and we were asked to do a spread for Cream which is a very hip and influential fashion/art magazine in Australia simply because they were inspired by our first performance of the festival. As far as the Australian trip is concerned, we're pretty dang sure we succeeded in completing the job we were sent to do and we're so very thankful to be where we're at right now. Speaking of where we're at right now...

We've got a show at The Troubadour this Saturday, April 25th! The bill is filled with awesome music as we have Haim and Canon opening for us - seriously, seriously, seriously you've got to get there early to see these guys. Like, for real. In fact, to quote Patrice, not just like for real, but for real for real. Turns out getting there at 8p.m. is actually mandatory...well maybe it's not, but I'm gonna be there at 8 front and center to see both of these acts 'cause I genuinely enjoy their music. Plus, remember it is a general admission room so if you get there early you can get a sweet spot :-)

As far as getting a sweet spot is concerned:

It's gonna be such a fun night and we may have a rough sketch of a new song for you! Also, we've been adding background vocals on more than a few songs so there will be some new musical morsels to chew on. Plus, on a personal note I FINALLY am getting a little time to practice so I'm excited about seeing where we'll take things musically when we stretch :-))))))))

As some of you may already know, our last show sold out by about 150+ people so we're recommending the FAX method for reserving seats - it's way freakin' cheaper than Ticketmaster (booo...) and it means that you won't be stuck outside in line without being able to get it! Hello fellow CARNEYites(?)....CARNeesians(?)....CARNEYterians (credit Matty Green for that one...)

Sooooo, we're totally playing another show at The Troubadour ;-) But, if you've gotten use to these updates you know that there's always a twiiiist! (Family Guy anyone?...)

We're finally mastered our debut album!!! As of right now we're pretty certain that we're completely finished and I can't tell you how excited I am to share this album with you all :-) It should be out within to next 6 months and hopefully we'll have some momentum going into it :-)

Speaking of momentum, we're going to Australia from April 7-17th to play at The Byron Bay Blues festival! If you have any friends out there that you want to share us with we'd love to meet them! It's going to be really really fun :-)

But back to this Troubadour show...as many of you may have already heard, our last show at the Troubadour sold out and left 150+ people left standing outside (which actually saddened us as much as it excited us to be selling out a 500+ seat venue.) SO, if you want to make sure you have a seat, I'd say to FAX in you're order - ticketmaster is totally bootleg and adds like $10 to each ticket, but you're welcome to do that if you want too. Here's the link to the fax form and all you gotta do is fill it out and fax it in - they may add like $2 but I'm not quite sure...also, there is a link below this description to the fax form in case you wanna click something big and special ;-)

CARNEY West Coast Tour 3/18-3/26 | News

Turns out we're doing a west coast tour in March! We're hitting Monterey, San Francisco, San Luis Obispo, Santa Cruz, Santa Barbara and San Diego along the way and we'd love to see some new and old faces at the shows!

This year we kick-started things with our first ever sell-out of The Troubadour, and we played a LIVE webcast last Saturday at a place called BOXeight that was broadcast to 57,000 people around the US/World(?)!

On a side note, I'm SO sorry to anyone that was not able to get on the guest lists for the BOXeight or VIMBY shows this past week. I was working like a dog trying to work that out but I know personally that there were more than a few of you that wrote to me after the guest lists were already filled. The good news is that it looks like BOXeight is going to invite us back and even if the guest list for THAT one fills up, we'll definitely be at The Troubadour on April 25th, 2009!

Anywho, starting next week we're co-headlining the crowned jewel event of LA Fashion Week with DJ Steve Aoki (!!!) to a press fanfare that includes Vogue, Nylon, Elle, 944, MTV, LA Times, Metromix, Harper's Bazaar and USA Today to name a few! After this runway show/concert we're doing a west coast tour, playing at an amazing charity benefit called Project Ethos, and then flying to Australia where we're going to release our very first single ever and play the Byron Bay Blues Festival! Oh, and we're totally playing Lollapalooza ;-) We couldn't be more excited and we can't wait to release our debut full-length studio album later this year!

But, back to the point of this event - we're doing a west coast run in March from 3/18-3/26 and we hope to see you or someone you know at one of these shows! We've done quite a few tours like this and sometimes we'll only be playing for 10 people in a room, so even if you don't live in one of these cities but want to share us with your friends, we'd love it if you'd tell them we're coming!
