Los Angeles – March 2009: When an artist gains across-the-board success, naysayers are quick to write him off as a “one-hit wonder.” Such was the case with Soulja Boy Tell‘Em, whose 2007 multi-cultural hit phenomenon “Crank That,” from his debut Souljaboytellem.com CD, literally spawned a mini industry of remixes, imitators and admirers. Sites such as YouTube bulged with brilliant recreations of his infectious video to “Crank That.” The Simpsons, Dora the Explorer, Alvin & the Chipmunks and many more spin-offs caught the Soulja Boy Tell’Em fever, paying homage to the song’s catchy rhythms and raps. With fans at his side, and the continued support of his label Collipark Music/Interscope, Soulja Boy Tell’Em hunkered down in his recording studio. The result was iSouljaBoyTellem, the 2008 follow-up that with time has proven its depth, producing two of 2009’s hottest singles.

Soulja Boy Tell‘Em proved his credibility on his smash single “Kiss Me Thru the Phone” (featuring Sammie). The Collipark/Interscope supastar has turned the temperature up way past nova as “Kiss Me Thru the Phone” topped the Billboard’s Rhythmic Top 40 Radio chart this week and is the # 1 ringtone download sales (1,000,000+) for an incredible eight weeks in a row on Billboard’s Hot Ringmaster’s chart. The song remained steady at #4 on the Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop chart and jumped to # 12 at Top 40, helped by a 1300-spin increase from the previous week, and is now at 107 million audience mark.

“Kiss Me Thru The Phone” also continued its climb up the Billboard Hot 100 chart, jumping a spot to #3 and holding steady at # 3 on the Digital Download chart with I,000,000 + downloads. The video peaked as the # 1 Video on BET’s “106 & Park”, and will move into MTV’s General Rotation alongside “Turn My Swag On,” which currently stands at # 27 on Billboard’s Hot R&B / Hip-Hop Songs chart and had a 20% Digital Singles chart swing to land at # 61 on the Hot 100 Chart. The Internet is also keeping pace with chart activity as the video has received over 30 million You Tube views to date, while Soulja Boy Tell‘Em’s MySpace page now boasts over 1,000,000 Friends and 216,000,000 Listens on MySpace. Popular mini-blog behemoth Twitter reports a 70,000 increase in Souljaboy followers over the past four weeks to bring his followers to well over 100,000.

Soulja Boy Tell‘Em will appear on BET’s “Spring Bling”, taping this weekend, and plans to announce a number of big radio and tour appearances on both the East and West Coasts through July. Soulja Boy Tell’Em’s television presence is not limited to video channels, though. Expect to see Soulja Boy Tell’em in a role on The CW Network’s “The Game” television show, which will air Friday May 15. With such activity, it’s not surprising to see the entertainment world turn its attention his way as several of today’s top rap artists have created unofficial remixes to the song. How did you come up with your nickname?
My momma gave me the name Soulja Boy when I was young, and I basically just kept it and ran with it. When I started rapping, in every song I'd say, "Soulja Boy Tell 'em" in the beginning of the song and that really just stuck with me. My fans called me that. The Collipark Music/Interscope Records rapper is now lining things up, as he prepares to release his sophomore album due at the end of this year. Though Soulja Boy's career has skyrocketed, success always mingles with a bit of drama. Soulja Boy has been amidst a verbal beef Gangsta Rap veteran, Ice-T, who had some harsh words for the young rapper and claimed he killed Hip-Hop.

Soulja Boy responded to Ice-T via a YouTube video, but the two rappers went back into their corners as the feud fizzled out. And as of recently Soulja Boy became the center of criticism due to a comment he made during an interview with a host from BET.

Yo! Raps caught up with the rising rapper/dancer/producer and discussed the slave master comment, his sophomore release and going up against Diddy in the Yo! Awards!

First, I must start with the historical moment we witnessed on November 4th, when Barack Obama became the President elect. Where were you when you heard the news and how do you feel?

Oh man, it's just crazy; it feels like it's too good to be true. It's like we're living in the future, it's the year 2008, and our President is black. It's just crazy to me though [laughs]. I was in the studio when it happened; I was finishing up my album. When they finally announced it, it was like the craziest feeling.
