Like the California the band dissects, Hole’s critically lauded third album drips with unbridled decadence and glossy shine. “I wanted to marry great hooks with a dense vision,” the band’s frontwoman Courtney Love said at the time. “I want to be as perverse as I'd like to be — while making you hum along with it."
Inspired, in part, by T.S. Eliot’s “The Waste Land,” the band mostly scrap the noisy antagonism of past albums in favor of songs that Rolling Stone described as “accessible, fiery and intimate — often at the same time.” Smashing Pumpkins’ Billy Corgan co-wrote five songs, including the blistering title track, while Go-Go’s guitarist Charlotte Caffey helped with “Reasons to Be Beautiful.”
The 1998 album would prove to be both prophetic and timeless in its message. “Given the fires in Los Angeles in January, there’s an uncanny correlation with the apocalyptic version of the California dream we were going for in Celebrity Skin," says guitarist Eric Erlandson. "Yet, it also included the idea of rebirth, regeneration, revival…which perhaps is a helpful message for these times.”
“Hole act as though making big radio-ready hits smart now equals pure punk rock,” Rolling Stone wrote at the time. “Celebrity Skin is all minimalist explosion, idiomatic flair and dead-on rhythms.” Or as NME put in in simpler terms, “You may never need to hear a rock & roll record ever again."

If you were in a club anywhere in the world in 2007, you were probably dancing to many tracks helmed by Timbaland, who Allmusic rightfully called “the reigning producer of R&B and rap since 1996.” For his second solo album, the producer extends past the R&B, rap and pop he made his name on for a star-studded musical gumbo featuring a mind-blowing array of guests. “Timbaland can do whatever he wants,” Rolling Stone wrote at the time. “Everyone and your grandmother wants to work with him. And on Shock Value, almost everyone does.”
Missy Elliott, Dr. Dre (“Bounce”), Justin Timberlake, Nelly Furtado (“Give it to Me”) and 50 Cent (“Come and Get Me”) dominate the album’s first half of thumping, futuristic tracks that soundtracked your favorite night out. From there, the uber-producer upends rock with collaborations with Fall Out Boy, the Hives and She Wants Revenge before closing with the mournful yet propulsive smash “Apologize” with OneRepublic and a freewheeling coda with Elton John on “2 Man Show.” The album went platinum that year for good reason, with the producer showing why he’s still untouchable.
